How do you take cuttings of rhododendron bushes?

Propagation of Rhododendron the most reliable method is layering branches in summer, but it is usually better to buy newer plants.

To layer, a flexible stem is pegged into the ground and left attached to the parent plant until roots have formed at the base of the layered shoot. This takes about 6 to 12 months.

What Barrie said. It's usually easier to just buy new plants, but this method will work if you want a new start off that particular plant for some reason--Grandma's favorite, for example, or if you just can't find the variety anymore. (I know how it is... I have several 'extinct' varieties in my posesssion.)
