Where should i plant a rhododendron?

Rhodies in the 49 parallel and higher do good on the west or east side of a house (south too hot, north too shady) The soil should be slightly acidic, they like that. Also, roots are very shallow and make sure it is planted in an area where the roots will not be trampled on. Feed with a good rhodie fertilizer each year and dead head the blossoms after it blooms.

Where should i plant a rhododendron?
In mostly shady, well drained, acidic soil with a lot of organic content. They are understory shrubs and prefer a more shady environment.
Reply:Kirk,

There are two basic problems with your question. First what zone do you live in. Second, what type of Rhodo do you want?

The zone will dictate the type of plant you can even possibly plant. The type can be varied from a tree Rhodo, an early bloom, broadleaf Rhodo, to Azalea! Yes, an Azalea is a Rhodo!!

Some of these plants you want to have in the shade, others, well they welcome the sun. Fact is most do better in partial shade. Some are compact, some bloom real early in most areas, some bloom twice a year (as in the tree type).

I can help if you wish to write back. I am at gjgjobs@yahoo.com. I will need the zone, your goal (is it a focus plant, foundation planting, or just a plant), and the type of plant as in large or small.

Whereas this plant comes in various sizes and types so do other evergreen plantings. Aside from the Azalea are Mountain Laurel, Heather, etc.

In Landscape, as with Real Estate, is is not the what! It is location, location, location. Good Luck. I know I can help you with this one. Jerry G.
Reply:In slightly acid soil. If you have slightly acid soil, the best place to plant them might be in a pot - because once they have taken a hold in a garden they can run wild and be difficult to eradicate.
