Can I hard prune a leggy rhododendron?

I have a very straggly 10 yr old rhod with beautiful flowers since I used the correct compost. Unfortunately after years of poor growth its all old brances and leggy. Should I leave it be or prune hard after flowering.

Can I hard prune a leggy rhododendron?
In Spring, cut back the older stems to 12 - 18 inches above soil level. In late summer, remove any thin or overcrowded shoots to allow the strong stems to grow.
Reply:Yes, they can't touch you for it.
Reply:yes give it a good prune
Reply:That sounds dirty. Immature but i just had to say it. lol
